Summary

The bestselling author of A Gentleman in Moscow and Rules of Civility and master of absorbing, sophisticated fiction returns with a stylish and propulsive novel set in 1950s America

In June, 1954, eighteen-year-old Emmett Watson is driven home to Nebraska by the warden of the work farm where he has just served a year for involuntary manslaughter。 His mother long gone, his father recently deceased, and the family farm foreclosed upon by the bank, Emmett’s intention is to pick up his eight-year-old brother and head west where they can start their lives anew。 But when the warden drives away, Emmett discovers that two friends from the work farm have hidden themselves in the trunk of the warden’s car。 Together, they have hatched an altogether different plan for Emmett’s future。

Spanning just ten days and told from multiple points of view, Towles’s third novel will satisfy fans of his multi-layered literary styling while providing them an array of new and richly imagined settings, characters, and themes。

Where do I even begin?? I am in awe。 AWE! Amor Towles is an amazing writer。 This is the third book of his that I have read recently。 The story centers around a cross country trip with many unexpected turns。 Emmett Watson serves fifteen months in prison for involuntary manslaughter。 When he returns home he finds his farm has been foreclosed on。 He plans on picking up his eight year old brother Billy and heading for California to start a new life。 What he didn't plan on is that two fellow prisoners hitched a ride in the warden's trunk and Amor Towles is an amazing writer。 This is the third book of his that I have read recently。 The story centers around a cross country trip with many unexpected turns。 Emmett Watson serves fifteen months in prison for involuntary manslaughter。 When he returns home he finds his farm has been foreclosed on。 He plans on picking up his eight year old brother Billy and heading for California to start a new life。 What he didn't plan on is that two fellow prisoners hitched a ride in the warden's trunk and they have a different plan for Emmett。 I recommend this book and also recommend his previous work, "A Gentleman in Moscow。" 。。。more

This is a fabulous, beautifully written new novel from Amor Towles。 I liked the idea of two brothers setting out on the Lincoln Highway (a route which was new to me) exploring and hoping to find their mother。 Having read the book, I think it would be a brilliant book club read - there is so much to discuss! In this novel, 18 year old Emmett returns to the family farm from Salina, a young offenders work camp, because his father has died。 The farm is sold, they have lost everything and he and his y This is a fabulous, beautifully written new novel from Amor Towles。 I liked the idea of two brothers setting out on the Lincoln Highway (a route which was new to me) exploring and hoping to find their mother。 Having read the book, I think it would be a brilliant book club read - there is so much to discuss! In this novel, 18 year old Emmett returns to the family farm from Salina, a young offenders work camp, because his father has died。 The farm is sold, they have lost everything and he and his younger brother Billy decide to drive the Lincoln Highway to look for their mother。 However, two other inmates from the camp have stowed away in the Warden's car and so four set off on the journey, but it does not turn out as planned。I have to be honest, at times this book is a slow burn。 Each chapter is numbered and each section of the chapter is subtitled with a person's name。 The sections narrated by Duchess are written in the first person, whilst all of the other parts are in the third person。 It made me wonder if the whole book is narrated by Duchess - I'm still not sure! But this structure means that sometimes the same thing is considered from the perspectives of each of the characters。 This makes for a slowly evolving plot but it should be savoured as the more you learn about each of the main characters, the more you become invested in their story。One of the things the author does particularly well is the development of Billy as a character and child。 Billy carries a beloved book with him throughout his journey and this book is repeatedly referred to along with Billy's reflections on writing his own story。 He wants to start in the middle, but is unsure where the middle is。 The chapters count down throughout the book and end on chapter one - is this the middle, the starting point for Billy's story? This is a book about family, friendship, revenge, heroes, dreams, adventure and very much about good and evil。 The ending is unexpected, tragic, funny, emotional and thought provoking。 The whole book is highly recommended。Thank you to NetGalley for an early copy of this book in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

Autumn is here, so I'm here with my big books again 🤣If the size of this book feels intimidating, let me assure you that this was an easy to read book。 Made up of short and well written chapters, the pages seemed to fly by。The characters of this book were wonderful。 They were so well realised that you feel the emotions they are experiencing with them。 I particularly enjoyed hearing from Billy and Sally - I wish there had been more of Sally - but Emmett, Woolly, Duchess and Ulysses were also all Autumn is here, so I'm here with my big books again 🤣If the size of this book feels intimidating, let me assure you that this was an easy to read book。 Made up of short and well written chapters, the pages seemed to fly by。The characters of this book were wonderful。 They were so well realised that you feel the emotions they are experiencing with them。 I particularly enjoyed hearing from Billy and Sally - I wish there had been more of Sally - but Emmett, Woolly, Duchess and Ulysses were also all brilliant characters whose minds I feel like I got to rummage around in。That said, the plot of this book and the way the p/o/v characters are written mean that there is a lot of repetition which, come the final 100 pages, began to truly annoy me。 The ending, for me, just wasn't very satisfying either。 I'm usually quite happy with an open ended book but there was so much within this book that meant for it to feel complete there needed to be some conclusion between Duchess and his Dad, Emneth and Sally, a mother and her sons。 It just felt unfinished rather than open ended despite its length。Otherwise the themes of this book were insightful and varied。 I enjoyed it。 It kept me company as the cold weather returned and fully set off my cosy autumnal reading phase。 。。。more

One of the best novels I’ve ever read。 The themes provoke contemplation 。 The characters are captivating although not all are good people。 The twists and cliffhangers often made me laugh especially once I trusted Towles to resolve them cleverly。 I was so sorry to get to the end of the book。

I loved this story! The relationships between brothers and between friends are portrayed beautifully。 As each grapples with his past, only the youngest steers them toward the future。 It is quietly suspenseful with lots of backstory to fill in the narrative。 Especially noteworthy are the many reflections on human nature, family, and responsibility。A large thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Random House for the ARC to read and review。

I didn’t really know what to expect from this book if I’m honest but I was sold on the marketing and the blurb。 I am 1000% not disappointed that I took a chance on this and requested it from NetGalley! The prose is almost poetic in how it flows from sentence to sentence as we follow Emmett and his brother across America。 The story itself only takes place across 4 or 5 days of real time but the flashbacks to the past of nearly every character do so much to bring it all to life。 You really feel fo I didn’t really know what to expect from this book if I’m honest but I was sold on the marketing and the blurb。 I am 1000% not disappointed that I took a chance on this and requested it from NetGalley!
